It's high time for an update.<br />
I'm glad to say the donkeys are all well and we are having a good summer weather-wise so far. No hay yet because the spring was dry and the grass did not grow and now that the rain has come and we have grass it has been too wet to make hay. Hopefully it will settle down before long - fingers crossed !<br />
<br />
In order of age -<br />
<b>Wellington</b> (now 33) is in fine form and came through the winter well, his bad feet were looking really good until he went back out to the field. It's a difficult balance - he needs to go out and eat grass and be with friends but he also needs to keep his feet dry so that they do not fall apart. He does appreciate his leather boots although he does NOT look after them !<br />
<b>Noah</b> is now 32 and is starting to look lovely again as he has got through his 'motheaten' period where he is half in and half out of his winter coat. He has been enjoying his retirement job of posing for photos .<br />
<b>Toby</b> is doing well too. We thought he had lost a little weight over the winter so we got the vet to check him over and the vet recommended a few changes to his medication. He has a new fly rug but it is Devon earth colour now of course ! He too is enjoying eating hay and sunbathing on the cobbles as he poses for photos.<br />
<b>Jake and Eli</b>,(aged 23) the two very fluffy donkeys are just starting to look summery. Jake has done some driving and had not forgotten how to do it even though it had been about a year since he had done any. Eli has been following visitors around the yard asking to be brushed and tickled because he loves it , and also helping out with the posing.<br />
<b>Jasper</b>, Jake's friend, is as fat as ever but it doesn't stop him wrestling with <b>Charlie</b> our little Boss donkey.Charlie and Jasper are itchy donkeys who wear fly-rugs at night and use them like judo-wrestling costumes ! The flies have not been too bad so far this year so that has been good for those two and Toby.<br />
Charlie has recently earned a blue rosette at the Parelli Games.<br />
<b>Sinead</b>, our Mother donkeys also went to the games and did her usual bit of upstaging Sue and Charlie but rolling luxuriously in the sand and making all the audience laugh.<br />
<b>Kiwi</b>, Sinead's first baby, is now 9 and is doing very well at the donkey rides.She can be a grumpy little Miss though. She is now just coming out in her beautiful black summer coat again.<br />
<b>Peter</b>, our second baby, is now 6 incredibly handsome and stands 13 hh (52" at the shoulder) . We hope he will start work this year as he is ready and has had us sitting on him. So far he has only carried Bart across the yard but he was not at all worried so we it's just finsing the time to complete his training.<br />
<b>Sarah</b>, our youngest, is now 4, stands as tall as her dad Sammy, at 13.1hh and is SO like Sammy ! She has his ears and soft lips. Her training is ongoing and she is gorgeous.<br />
<b>Sammy</b> and his friend <b>Pierre</b>, our two stallions, still live 2 miles away. They have been doing more riding lately as Sue has been taking part in a Parelli riding course. (See our films on Youtube !)<br />
Last but not least our new mule <b>Rupert</b> (aged 3) is his usual bouncy self.He has grown 3" in teh year that we have had him. He is very quick to learn and can be very energetic.<br />
<br />

At last Sammy has not been lame for long enough for us to get in some riding.<br />
Pierre was not too impressed because he had to stay in the shelter so that he didn't get in the way.It was getting darker and darker so no time for several 'takes' .<br />
First we had to go round the obstacles on the lead, then again riding.<br />
Sammy was such a good boy first time round but by then Pierre was really jealous so Sammy just HAD to go to visit him and make sure he was ok. THEN he did the ridden round !<br />

We've missed out on our agility in july and september because there's just not enough time to set it up, practice a bit and film it so it's very good to now get back to it.<br />
<br />
Here are some of our summer videos :-<br />
June - a new obstacle - the TUNNEL !<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The weather was great ,
the ground was solid rather than muddy and we had lots of room here
in the field. Our coach Vanessa gave us a talk on persuading our
donkeys to lead on a loose rope and NOT eat and on how to tell if our
donkey was afraid of going over, under or through and what to do
about it. We all had a practice then showed off our best obstacle.
After dinner we did all the obstacles in turn to earn marks and get a
rosette.</div>

Don't know how it has got to May already ! So much to catch up with including<br />
the coming of the new tractor and moving of the Great Poo Heap,<br />
riding lessons for Pierre and Sammy,<br />
our great Donkey Agility Day,<br />
the arrival of new helpers for the summer,<br />
Welly's new boots<br />
and Donkey birthdays galore!<br />
<br />
Our big baby Sarah (aka Tiddly) was 2 years old on 9 th April<br />
Sinead, our lovely Mother donkey celebrated her 11th birthday on 8th may<br />
Peter has become 4 years old on 21st May<br />
HAPPY BIRTHDAY everyone !<br />
<br />
Peter says a BIG 'thank you! ' to Peter who has adopted him for his Birthday present.<br />
<br />
Here are our agility videos for May:-<br />
Peter scored 98 out of 100 - more than any of us have ever scored ! Wow! Now we are promoted to First level (from starter level). Sammy was promoted at the end of last year. Oo-er .. they do trotting in first level!<br />
Pete lost a mark for loosing the smile in the rope at the 'gate' and for treading on the backing -up pole (oops Mr Clumsy !).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/IZnjf65eNa0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kiwi came second with 96 - being her usual mischeivous self and trying to knock over the cones and pull the rope and sneak off in the L Bend .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/UZkDW-ASqXs?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next was Sarah with her FIRST OFFICIAL ENTRY !</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She was not allowed to enter until she was two - which she is now. :>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not a bad round scoring 90 points but could do better ! She lost lots of marks for banging poles and refusing to wait - we reckon she thought it was tea time as she'd been standing around watching the others and it was getting dark...... and the flies were out.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Dysv0bmBhTg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sarah only just beat her mum Sinead who scored 88 points</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/bv2exj3jinc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pierre did a nice liberty round</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/1a6U7htNCS8?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Clovelly Estate gardens like to have it and are supposed to provide us somewhere accessible to put it but...with all the bad weather thee is mud everywhere and they have not been able to do lots of their work so the easy bins are full and the approach to the other is under 1ft of mud and our tractor can't get up the slope to the place they really want it. It's even worse because our usual tractor blew an axle bearing in the summer and we've been using our smaller one.<br />
<br />
So - when our little tractor broke down again we had to decide about replacing it and it had to be with something that would do the job despite the ever-increasing difficulties. After a good hunt around on the internet we tracked down some likely candidates and a nice person who would give us some advice and set off to see tractors in Somerset.<br />
<br />
We checked first that the dealers were not flooded! We had a lovely drive as it happened but when we arrived we could see the Somerset levels all flooded - in an attempt to save Mucheleney the authorities were pumping water out from there onto land around the tractor dealers - the road was just awash about 1" deep.<br />
<br />
We looked at several tractors - we like them better than sports cars - and ended up with a choice between a good second hand one that was a bit too pricey or a new 'cheap Chinese'. We were too worried about second hand cheap Chinese not being reliable(since we would be spending lots of money on it).We eventually chose the new Chinese. Now we have to wait a few weeks for it to be ready..then a new blue shiney Chinese tractor will arrive...and we will be paying back a loan...........the poo heap is getting ever bigger......hope we have a good summer next year!Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-73347140741241033282014-02-28T12:06:00.001-08:002014-02-28T12:06:12.144-08:00February catchupWell here we are in Feb and December and january have just gone by in a flash.<br />
December as usual was spent trying to get all the donkey adopters their christmas cards and news - this time online but it seems to have been a bit of a disaster as many people said they couldn't open the files. Big apologies to everyone - if you should have received a card and havn't please email us !<br />
<br />
While December was dryish the donkeys were able to go out most days until about a fortnight before Christmas. Then the rain came in to stay and the donks have been in the stables and yard ever since. January was one of the wetest we have ever seen - though the warmest too, no frost at all but storm after huge storm. We are most fortunate that we are not really at too much risk of flooding.The fields quickly became waterlogged and still are. The donkeys have been going for walks along the Hobby Drive . After their morning feed they mill about in the yard begging to go. Giffy pings the electric wire (which isn't on - sshh! ) , she and Welly have pretend biting matches and Peter tries to open the tack room door. Charlie and Jasper play tug with the headcollars as we put them on and baby Kiwi hangs on the end of the collars while we do everyone else!<br />
<br />
Bart went away for 3 weeks leaving Sue and the stalwart helpers Terry, Paul, Nigel and Anne helpers to look after everyone. Not a problem but nothing much except donkey care gets done when we are a hand short! Then we had a major disaster - While he was away the little tractor who pulls our poo trailer twice a week broke down and has now died. We have had to make a big decision about replacing it - so nowwe will buy a new tractor on a bank loan. Hate to be in debt to anyone but sometimes there is no choice.....Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-37513207725677673672014-02-28T11:54:00.001-08:002014-02-28T11:54:11.035-08:00Christmas Agility<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here we all are having a go among the Christmas decorations:-<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/VLHu8fSHnMw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Sammy - when we came to the curtain he spotted the tinsel - clever boy! Here's Jakey Ted's debut entry :-<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/A9qQ9T4_yC0/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/A9qQ9T4_yC0?version=3&f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/A9qQ9T4_yC0?version=3&f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
Here's Jake's friend Jasper - his second entry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/hHOF6YBiK0c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
...and Charlie with Sue...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/2M2pRdClrts?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but he did a better round for Bart.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/8ejKHPk2iPk?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
that's Toby in the middle. He hates to be left out so we play a bit with Toby too. Toby can't see very well but we are hoping to teach him to follow so that he is able to take part.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's Sammy the big stallion:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/TgYxeIwFNMM?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
..and here's Sammy's friend Pierre being Pierre. He's slow but he was comingbecause he wanted to not because he was being pulled. He hates being on the lead as you can see by all the rope tossing !</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our helpers Anne and Nigel had a go too with Noah and Sinead so hopefully we'll be able to post their videos soon too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now to see what marks we all got.........</div>

I'll try to catch up as we have done some agility in November, a Christmas shoot in December and had so much going on in January that we missed out on the agility.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/RLq6d73XGGw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
Here is Pierre doing his best ever (we think) Agility at Liberty.When he's at liberty he can leave any time he wants to.'When you take off all the equipment what's left is the truth' Have to wait to see what the judges think though - we made lots of mistakes on the obstacles and in between he did lots of things he didn't have to - but it helped to keep his attention on the job. he is really starting to follow now but we still have a long way to go. That's why we do agility - because it's a challenge and not as easy as it looks!Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-34756213004678321952013-10-13T12:13:00.003-07:002013-10-13T12:13:47.214-07:00Jasper's Agility Debut Time to film this month's Online Horse Agility entry !<br />
It's getting dark much earlier now so we had to set everything up in a hurry.<br />
Our donkeys love knocking over all the obstacles so we shut them in the shed. Just as well because the horrid biting flies started to come out. Charlie said he wanted to go first but when he came out the flies put him off and he dived into the stable ! Jasper was already in there so we asked him to go first....and.....he did really well !<br />
His little tail swished all the way round. He did the gate really well.....He was a bit hesitant about backing up through the T-shape but stepped into the hoop perfectly. He didn't want to stand there though and didn't think that scary flag was nice a t all !!! However he did such a good job and it was the first time he had done a filming all by himself so we say WELL DONE JAS !<br />

One problem - if you are both taking part you need a third person to do the filming !<br />
Fortunately our friend and mule-lover Gill walked in right on cue. Gill has adopted Jasper so she had to have a go with him too.Here is Sue with Jake and Gill with Jasper. Now Jasper is still very uncertain of strange things, being a shy person, so - didn't they do well ? !!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/odQw-8RrWRw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
There are points for doing the obstacles properly and on a loose rope and special points for co-ordination and free flow between the obstacles. Ahh well.............<br />
Here's Sue with Peter and Bart with Kiwi.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/9PEHKQElnHc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
...and here's Gill with Peter and Bart with Kiwi. Gill is very experienced with mules and knows just how to be gentle and calm with the donkeys. She is a member of the British Mule Society.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/P0A1Ic5Qc2s?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's our mule Giffy in action with Sue and Bart has her donkey friend Wellington. This is the first time Welly had done an agility course. Not bad for a 30-yr-old !</div>

Sue and baby Kiwi have passed their Parelli level 1. We got 1++ too so we are really pleased !<br />
Lots of thanks to Parelli folks near and far, the International Horse Agility Club for getting us out to practice by competing at agility and Bart the cameraman. :>)<br />
This is our 'Audition' :<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">And here's Sinead :</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our mother donkeys Sinead is 9 and quite bossy but very gentle and friendly. She likes to do what she wants and can be quite impossible to move, or stop, at times !</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Underneath she is not so confident really.......</div>
<br />Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-16583015184148879772013-07-02T17:05:00.001-07:002013-07-02T17:05:33.307-07:00Charlie on the June agility course<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's little Charlie showing what a confident little chap he is. I do wonder what was up with those cones.....Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-83832155161541935672013-07-02T17:03:00.001-07:002013-07-02T17:03:35.389-07:00Wellington and Bart having a go at the June agility starter level course.Well.....we wanted to have a go at agility with some of our donkeys who had not done it before or not had much practice. It would be good for them and we hope it might encourage some of you good folks out there to come and compete with us in the International Horse Agility Club. We know these guys will have a low score but that's OK - you can beat us easily !<br />
<br />
When we started filming the weather was dull but OK. THEN...the wind got up and it became a bit wild !<br />
<br />
Here's Wellington, who is now our eldest donkey, doing his best - and doing a remarkably good job too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Sijg0Hgwrwo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

We would loose LOADs of marks for tight ropes , poor backing etc, etc .... she actually has a very good reverse gear ( she is a driving mule and very good at reversing her cart) so we just have to learn how to switch it on when needed!<br />
<br />
Peter the barrel-basher thought the barrels didn't look right standing up and Charlie decided the cameraman needed some help.<br />
<br />
It was VERY windy by the time we did the filming so Giffy did very well and showed the benefit of her 34 years of experience of life's challenges !<br />
<br />
(and I seem to have worked out how to get a picture to link to the video !)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Charlie did very well but doesn't go back too well, made a mess of the cones and Peter got in his way.<br />
Peter took fright when all the flags blew over and the bottle jumped out of the bottle bank - and Charlie got in HIS way.<br />
Giffy did a great round for a 34-yr-old lady trying something new - and Charlie got in the way of the camera.<br />
Noah did two rounds quite nicely but messed up a different obstacle each time and , as usual, didn't want to go backwards.<br />
Sinead did her very best, bless 'er, and showed that she is not as confident as she makes out!<br />
Jake and Jasper had a go but our friends who were leading them didn't want to be filmed ! :>(<br />
<br />

She scored 82 and was very good for going through the water obstacle because she's too young to have crossed much water yet. It was a VERY windy day too and the flags and bottles kept blowing everywhere.Clovelly Donkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07989691663909762094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3872854768158633405.post-89608343431305189292013-06-07T16:06:00.001-07:002013-06-07T16:06:09.375-07:00Kiwi and ParelliSue and Kiwi are trying to pass their Parelli Level 1 assessment to become OFFICIAL Level 1 Parelli folks !<br />
